5 Relevant singers in Brazilian popular music

The day of Brazilian popular music or MPB is celebrated on October 17, the day on which the composer and multi-instrumentalist Chiquinha Gonzaga was born, responsible for composing the song "Ó Abre Alas". 1. Maria Bethânia:

Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, Maria Bethânia gained prominence during the 1960s by making theatrical plays with Gal Costa, Tom Zé and her brother Caetano Veloso. But her greatest highlight was in songs such as: "As canções que você fez para mim”, "Fera Ferida" and "Tenha calma".

2. Marisa Monte:

The carioca Marisa Monte began her musical career in the late 1980s. Her first album, released in 1989, brought her first hit song, "Bem que se Quis". In 1991, he released "Mais", with the songs "Beija Eu" and "Ainda Lembro", in partnership with Ed Motta. In 2002, she joined the Tribalistas trio, with Arnaldo Antunes and Carlinhos Brown.
Over the last 30 years, she has been consolidating a career full of musical successes.

3. Gal Costa:

In 1945, Salvador, Bahia, Maria das Graças Penna Burgos was born, or Gal Costa, as she was knowing by all. 
It was one of the voices that represented the Tropicália movement, which mixed the rock of the 1960s with other Brazilian rhythms. Throughout her career, she has had great hits such as: "Quando Você Olha pra Ela", "Divino Maravilhoso", "Vapor Barato" and "Como 2 e 2", in addition to being the voice in the opening of the soap opera, based on the work of the Brazilian writer Jorge Amado, - Gabriela, with the song: "Modinha para Gabriela". 
Gal Costa died on November 9, 2022, at the age of 77.

4. Maysa:

On June 6, 1936, singer Maysa, one of the most outstanding and ground-breaking singers and songwriters of the 1950s, was born in Rio de Janeiro. Her first piece was made in 1956, when he released "Convite para Ouvir Maysa", an album with the hits "Adeus" and "Resposta". She was also one of the first singers to record the bossa nova "O Barquinho", a composition by Roberto Menescal and Ronaldo Boscoli. Throughout her career she went through several controversies for her firm posture, striking phrases, and alcohol addictions, even so, she became unforgettable thanks to her voice and dramatic lyrics like those in the songs "Meu Mundo Caiu" and "Demais". 
On January 22, 1977, she suffered a car accident on the Rio-Niterói Bridge and died at the age of 41.

5. Elis Regina

One of the most striking artists of MPB, Elis Regina was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1945. She began his career in the 1960s, when she won festivals, in addition to co-presenting a musical program with Jair Rodrigues, "O Fino da Bossa". She released several albums, among them: "Falao brilhante", in which are the songs "Como Nossos Pais" and "Fascinação". In addition, other great successes of her career were: "Alô alô Marciano", "Águas de Março", with Tom Jobim, "aprendendo a jogar" and "Tiro ao Álvaro", with Adoniran Barbosa. Sadly, she died at the age of 36 due to an overdose.
