5 movies to get to know Brazil

In Brazil, film production can suffer from many investment problems, however, even with monetary restrictions, they are able to bring remarkable stories, which reveal a little of the Brazilian lifestyle. Check out now five Brazilian movies that show what it's like to live in the country!

1. Minha mãe é uma peça (dir. Susana Garcia, Andre Pellenz, César Rodrigue) (2013)

In this film we meet the family of Dona Hermínia, a housewife with three children, who throughout the plot, brings memories and lessons she learned as a mother, sister, friend and wife.
Fun and exciting, the film stars the late Paulo Gustavo and has become an element of Brazilian culture, for bringing some common characteristics among most mothers in Brazil.

2. Que horas ela volta? (dir. Anna Muylaert) (2015)

This film tells the story of Val (Regina Casé), a maid from Pernambuco living in São Paulo, providing money for her family in the northeast. Her relationship with her bosses are good, but things change when Val's daughter, Jessica (Camila Márdila) will spend a some time with her mother. What time does she come back? (2015)
This film is a landmark of Brazilian cinema, because it denounces the dynamics between boss and maid, showing how cordial it can be, but also very problematic. In addition, it shows the mission of the lower-class Brazilians to improve their lives for money and studies.

3. The Wedding of Romeo & Juliet (dir. Bruno Barreto) (2005)

Combining one of the greatest classics of the theatre with one of the main rivalries of Brazilian soccer - this is the narrative of "The Wedding of Romeo & Juliet".

In this story, Romeo (Marco Ricca), a Corinthians totally invested in his team, falls in love with Julieta (Luana Piovani), a young woman from Palmeiras with a father (Luís Gustavo) who’s even more of a fan. Now, Romeo needs to pretend that he is not from the rival team to get the girl and her family.

4. O Auto da Compadecida (dir. Guel Arraes) (2000)

Based on the play by renowned brazilian author Ariano Suassuna, "O Auto da Compadecida" tells the story of Chicó (Selton Mello) and João Grilo (Matheus Nachtergaele) - two poor boys who live in the drought region in the northeast, who to survive, can only take small amounts of water.

Comedy is a great product of brazilian culture, because it brings the difficult issue of precariousness and poverty in some regions of the northeast, along with the strong religiosity of the place - all with a special dose of humour.

 

5. Bingo - the King of Mornings (dir. Daniel Rezende) (2017)

Based on real facts, "Bingo - the King of the Mornings" brings the story of the actor, clown and television animator, Bingo (Vladimir Brichta) and all his experience throughout this journey.

As well as bringing the actor's biography, the film also tells the story of Brazilian television of the 1980s, full of controversy.
